The Monks' Art of Healing
Some items of everyday life discovered in the Alpirsbach monastery give information on personal hygiene and medical usage in the 15th and 16th century. Some of them were known in pharmacies of that time and are possibly associated with the monastery's department for sick people. Background information on the art of healing at that time is given by means of examples. Contemporaneous representations explain the methods and their effects according to actual research. We will pay particular attention to medicinal plants. Selected herbs and plants will help to verify whether the medieval promises on healing which were mainly based on intuition and experience are consistent with today's knowledge.
